Title: Occupational Therapist – Off Site.
Location: State of Michigan, primarily Oakland / Macomb County.
Position Type: Regular full-time, grant funded, at-will, exempt, salaried.
Salary Range: $70,000 to $75,000 depending upon experience and education.

General Summary
This position is an advanced occupational therapy consultant position that works with clients of MRS to identify necessary reasonable accommodations and make recommendations for those policy, process and/or equipment modifications, including hands-on assistive technology evaluations. They will also be responsible for working closely with Michigan businesses and Business Relation Consultants working on and off business sites. This position provides in-service training on disability awareness, ergonomics, and injury prevention to support public and private sector employees and clients with a disability in safely returning to and maintaining productive employment. Performs as a resource for the purchase of equipment . This position advises division and agency staff on disability management, ergonomics, assistive technology, reasonable accommodations, job analysis, safety/prevention, return-to-work issues; and educates as well as provides technical assistance for employers, employees, and to vocational rehabilitation counselors regarding these issues in both the public and private workforce sector. Job requires knowledge of ergonomics, MIOSHA guidelines, the Americans with Disabilities Act and ADA Accessibility Guidelines, Michigan Workers' Compensation and Auto No-Fault Laws. Position requires a high level of personal time management and tracking of professional time on projects and/or services rendered as well as number of customers served.
EDUCATION
Attainment of an entry level degree in occupational therapy from an accredited university; this may be at the bachelors, masters or OTD level. Possession of State of Michigan licensure in good standing.
RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibility 1
General Summary
Advise MRS counselors, client customers and business customers regarding specific workplace accommodations, assistive technology recommendations, and ergonomic recommendations which will enable employees to maintain current employment or to return to work in a safe and productive manner.. Performs job analyses of job classifications which provides the business with the objective information needed to develop a functional job description and assists employers in job placement and return to work issues.
Individual tasks of Responsibility.
- Performs reasonable accommodation assessments in office and industrial workplace settings.
- Performs and advises ADA Accessibility Guideline Assessments for MI Businesses and provides written report with recommendations.
- Performs worksite evaluation in person and/or virtually.
- Performs task chair evaluations.
- Performs evaluations for assistive technology and provides written recommendations.
- Performs job analysis for physical and cognitive demands of a specific position.
- Research equipment or processes which may be required to accommodate the individual employee's needs.
- Prepares written reports with specific recommendations.
- Maintains contact with the business, return-to-work coordinators, reasonable accommodation coordinators, medical professionals, and the MRS customer.
- Provides complex case consultation and services to vocational rehabilitation counselors to assist their customers with training for, obtaining or maintaining employment and implementing career advancement strategies.
Responsibility 2
General Summary
Consult with businesses, employees, human resource professionals, and medical and rehabilitation personnel regarding reasonable accommodations, job analysis, assistive technology, ergonomics and related strategies on a state-wide basis.
Individual tasks of Responsibility.
- Respond to specific requests for advisement from the above-noted individuals. Individuals seeking advice may be either from the public or private sector.
- Develop specific recommendations for both business and client customers in regard to an employee’s ability to retain their job or return to work with reasonable accommodation, that may include modifications to process, policy or assistive technology and/or ergonomic equipment recommendations.
- Provide, consult, and promote Disability Awareness Training, such as Windmills®.
- Provide formal presentations to business customers, employer organizations, employees and managers for training or education purposes on disability-related topics.
- Work and communicate effectively with internal agency programs to effectively serve the business community.
- Work with and serve a diverse group of coworkers and customers.
- Demonstrate the ability to be adaptable to change in conditions and balance multiple priorities.
Responsibility 3
General Summary
Advise Business Network Division (BND) and other MRS staff regarding new techniques, equipment, or processes designed to enhance the services provided by BND in support of the dual customers of the agency, client and business customers.
Individual tasks of Responsibility.
- Coordinates their use of the facilities in the Oak Park and Lansing office locations with other BND staff. This includes scheduling client customers as well as outside participants, such as vendors or manufacturer representatives and other individuals.
- Provide case consultation to BND/Disability Management and other MRS staff regarding options or recommendations for specific cases to which the staff are assigned.
Responsibility 4
General Summary
Researches and evaluates equipment which will be of benefit to individuals and groups of employees to reduce or eliminate barriers caused by disability to complete essential job functions in the workplace.
Individual tasks of Responsibility.
- Determines specific needs which exist for employees with disabilities, either unique for a person or needed for a group of employees.
- Meets with other MRS staff, manufacturer’s representatives, vendors, medical personnel or others regarding available equipment to meet the needs of customers.
- Obtains and evaluates the equipment in relation to the identified need. Whenever possible, provides an opportunity for the customer to trial equipment.
- Recommends the appropriate equipment to the individual employee or group of employees who would benefit from the equipment.
- Maintains the BND Resource Library, both digital and physical, to enable other staff to have access to the developed information.
- Maintains the actual equipment for use by staff, as feasible.
Responsibility 5
General Summary
Provides in-service ergonomics training and work injury prevention training for public and private sector employees and businesses. Researches, develops, presents, evaluates and modifies training programs designed to educate employers and employees regarding ergonomic topics, work injury prevention, job analysis, reasonable accommodation, Americans with Disabilities Act and related topics.
Individual tasks of the Responsibility.
- Plans, develops, and conducts training sessions, workshops, webinars, conferences, seminars and programs as well as promotion of these training sessions etc. regarding safety issues, basic ergonomic concepts, body mechanics, and the ADA to employers statewide.
- Responds to requests for specific, unique training from internal offices, agencies or departments and external businesses and community organizations.
- Determines the specific training needs of the business, which may include site visits, interaction with management and employees.
- Researches and develops the training program and presentations for public speaking projects.
- Negotiates time, location, fees, handout material and related information for the training.
- Conducts the training, including allowing for feedback from management and employees.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of the training for future presentations.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
NOTE: Some knowledge in the area listed is required at the entry level, developing knowledge is required at the intermediate level, considerable knowledge is required at the experienced level, and thorough knowledge is required at the advanced level.
- Advanced knowledge of principles and practices of occupational therapy.
- Knowledge of strategies used for education, training, accommodation for and employment of individuals who are mentally ill, cognitively impaired, have social limitations and/or have significant sensory impairments and/or are physically disabled.
- Skilled in evaluation of individuals with disabilities to identify appropriate adapted equipment such as assistive technology in the form of computers or low-tech options like organization strategies or pen and paper planners. Skilled in the use of adapted equipment and able to train others in its use.
- Ability to collaborate with and gain the cooperation of clients, businesses, students, and team members of other disciplines.
- Ability evaluate process in selected tasks of self-care, disability management, training tasks, and essential work tasks to restore, reinforce, and enhance performance, and to promote and maintain employment.
- Ability to devise work projects from available materials.
- Ability to work with professionals and other personnel in including MRS home office counselors and staff, MCTI staff, businesses, and community partners and providers.
- Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to devices and equipment as needed.
- Ability to maintain records, prepare reports and correspondence related to the work with varying audiences.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others in multiple formats including written and verbal, including individual discussions, small groups, and large audience presentations.
- Ability to maintain favorable public relations including working with businesses, instructional staff, MRS counselors and staff, MCTI students and their families, community resource organizations, and community partners.
- Adequate PC computer literacy to efficiently and effectively produce reports and maintain records using multiple programs including Microsoft Office, MiBRS, AWARE, and others as needed.
- Excellent time management skills; will be required to manage time and resources while working on many different tasks, projects, and activities.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities.
ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge and understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act and ADA Accessibility Guidelines, ergonomics, workplace accommodations, work injury prevention, assistive technology, job and task analysis, and work risk analysis. It would be beneficial to have knowledge and understanding of MRS policy, and WIOA guidelines, Michigan Worker’s Compensation and Auto No-Fault Laws. Supervise level II occupational therapy students.
Working Conditions
Some tasks require direct or indirect contact with prisoners, working in highly restricted areas, in areas with dangers including machinery with moving parts, exposure to heights, cut risk, fall risk, and hours outside the standard workday. Occasionally tasks require working in extreme conditions including variances in temperature, exposed to dust, fumes, gases, and allergens.
Tasks will require statewide travel, occasionally overnight.
The position requires the physical ability to:
- Lift, carry, push and pull items weighing up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis, 50 pounds occasionally, and up to 80 pounds rarely.
- Kneel, stoop, bend and twist to access equipment.
- Occasionally walking on a variety of surfaces.
- Occasionally standing, walking, and working in extreme conditions, exposed to dust, fumes, gases, and allergens.
- Ability to perform CPR when needed.
- Hold a valid Michigan Driver’s license.
